RESUMO

Researchers in the biological and behavioural sciences are increasingly conducting collaborative, multi-sited projects to address how phenomena vary across ecologies. These types of projects, however, pose additional workflow challenges beyond those typically encountered in single-sited projects. Through specific attention to cross-cultural research projects, we highlight four key aspects of multi-sited projects that must be considered during the design phase to ensure success: (1) project and team management; (2) protocol and instrument development; (3) data management and documentation; and (4) equitable and collaborative practices. Our recommendations are supported by examples from our experiences collaborating on the Evolutionary Demography of Religion project, a mixed-methods project collecting data across five countries in collaboration with research partners in each host country. To existing discourse, we contribute new recommendations around team and project management, introduce practical recommendations for exploring the validity of instruments through qualitative techniques during piloting, highlight the importance of good documentation at all steps of the project, and demonstrate how data management workflows can be strengthened through open science practices. While this project was rooted in cross-cultural human behavioural ecology and evolutionary anthropology, lessons learned from this project are applicable to multi-sited research across the biological and behavioural sciences.

Osteosarcoma (OS) is a malignant bone neoplasm plagued by poor prognosis. Major treatment strategies include chemotherapy, radiotherapy, and surgery. Chemotherapy to treat OS has severe adverse effects due to systemic toxicity to healthy cells. A possible way to overcome the limitation is to utilize nanotechnology. Nanotherapeutics is an emerging approach in treating OS using nanoparticulate drug delivery systems. Surgical resection of OS leaves a critical bone defect requiring medical intervention. Recently, tissue engineered scaffolds have been reported to provide physical support to bone defects and aid multimodal treatment of OS. These scaffolds loaded with nanoparticulate delivery systems could also actively repress tumor growth and aid new bone formation. The rapid developments in nanotherapeutics and bone tissue engineering have paved the way for improved treatment efficacy for OS-related bone defects. This review focuses on current bifunctional nanomaterials-based tissue engineered (NTE) scaffolds that use novel approaches such as magnetic hyperthermia, photodynamic therapy, photothermal therapy, bioceramic and polymeric nanotherapeutics against OS. With further optimization and screening, NTE scaffolds could meet clinical applications for treating OS patients.

Pediatric patients with high-risk neuroblastoma have poor survival rates and urgently need more effective treatment options with less side effects. Since novel and improved immunotherapies may fill this need, we dissect the immunoregulatory interactions in neuroblastoma by single-cell RNA-sequencing of 24 tumors (10 pre- and 14 post-chemotherapy, including 5 pairs) to identify strategies for optimizing immunotherapy efficacy. Neuroblastomas are infiltrated by natural killer (NK), T and B cells, and immunosuppressive myeloid populations. NK cells show reduced cytotoxicity and T cells have a dysfunctional profile. Interaction analysis reveals a vast immunoregulatory network and identifies NECTIN2-TIGIT as a crucial immune checkpoint. Combined blockade of TIGIT and PD-L1 significantly reduces neuroblastoma growth, with complete responses (CR) in vivo. Moreover, addition of TIGIT+PD-L1 blockade to standard relapse treatment in a chemotherapy-resistant Th-ALKF1174L/MYCN 129/SvJ syngeneic model induces CR. In conclusion, our integrative analysis provides promising targets and a rationale for immunotherapeutic combination strategies.

Myeloid cells (granulocytes and monocytes/macrophages) play an important role in neuroblastoma. By inducing a complex immunosuppressive network, myeloid cells pose a challenge for the adaptive immune system to eliminate tumor cells, especially in high-risk neuroblastoma. This review first summarizes the pro- and anti-tumorigenic functions of myeloid cells, including granulocytes, monocytes, macrophages, and myeloid-derived suppressor cells (MDSC) during the development and progression of neuroblastoma. Secondly, we discuss how myeloid cells are engaged in the current treatment regimen and explore novel strategies to target these cells in neuroblastoma. These strategies include: (1) engaging myeloid cells as effector cells, (2) ablating myeloid cells or blocking the recruitment of myeloid cells to the tumor microenvironment and (3) reprogramming myeloid cells. Here we describe that despite their immunosuppressive traits, tumor-associated myeloid cells can still be engaged as effector cells, which is clear in anti-GD2 immunotherapy. However, their full potential is not yet reached, and myeloid cell engagement can be enhanced, for example by targeting the CD47/SIRPα axis. Though depletion of myeloid cells or blocking myeloid cell infiltration has been proven effective, this strategy also depletes possible effector cells for immunotherapy from the tumor microenvironment. Therefore, reprogramming of suppressive myeloid cells might be the optimal strategy, which reverses immunosuppressive traits, preserves myeloid cells as effectors of immunotherapy, and subsequently reactivates tumor-infiltrating T cells.

How the essential eukaryotic chaperonin TRiC/CCT assembles from eight distinct subunits into a unique double-ring architecture remains undefined. We show TRiC assembly involves a hierarchical pathway that segregates subunits with distinct functional properties until holocomplex (HC) completion. A stable, likely early intermediate arises from small oligomers containing CCT2, CCT4, CCT5, and CCT7, contiguous subunits that constitute the negatively charged hemisphere of the TRiC chamber, which has weak affinity for unfolded actin. The remaining subunits CCT8, CCT1, CCT3, and CCT6, which comprise the positively charged chamber hemisphere that binds unfolded actin more strongly, join the ring individually. Unincorporated late-assembling subunits are highly labile in cells, which prevents their accumulation and premature substrate binding. Recapitulation of assembly in a recombinant system demonstrates that the subunits in each hemisphere readily form stable, noncanonical TRiC-like HCs with aberrant functional properties. Thus, regulation of TRiC assembly along a biochemical axis disfavors the formation of stable alternative chaperonin complexes.

Introducción: El carcinoma basocelular es actualmente el cáncer de piel más frecuente, siendo su principal factor de riesgo la exposición a radiación ultravioleta. Su tratamiento es la resección quirúrgica, según riesgo de recurrencia. La reconstrucción facial posterior a la resección se enfrentará según la unidad estética de la cara, lo cual determinará la técnica quirúrgica a utilizar. Material y Método: El siguiente caso clínico aborda la resección de un carcinoma basocelular nodular morfeiforme ubicado en mejilla y ala nasal, y posterior reconstrucción mediante el uso de un Colgajo de Mustardé, con resultado exitoso. Resultados: Evolución favorable, con reseccion completa de la lesion tumoral y vitalidad del colgajo postoperatorio. Cursó con una leve desviación nasal que cedió con masaje de la cicatriz. Se puede plantear una plastía de retoque del ala nasal a futuro. Conclusión: Presentamos un caso clínico de un carcinoma basocelular facial con alto riesgo de recurrencia que fue tratado en forma segura y efectiva con un colgajo de Mustardé.


Introduction: Basal-cell carcinoma is currently the most frequent type of skin cancer, its main risk factor being exposure to ultraviolet radiation. Treatment consists of surgical resection, according to recurrence risk. Post-resection facial reconstruction should be faced according to the aesthetic unit of the face, which will determine the surgical technique. Material and Method: The following clinical case presents the resection of a morpheiform nodular basal-cell carcinoma located on the cheek and nasal wing, and subsequent reconstruction using a Mustarde flap, with successful results. Results: Favorable evolution with complete resection of the tumor lesion and postoperative vitality of the flap. The patient presented a slight nasal deviation that resolved with scar massage. A nasal wing plasty can be considered in the future. Conclusion: We present a facial basal-cell carcinoma clinical case that was safely and effectively treated with a Mustarde flap.

We review research on gendered patterns of internalizing behaviors in adolescents and emerging adults during the COVID-19 pandemic. We find that young women reported worse mental health than young men. Transgender and gender-diverse (TGD) youth are underrepresented in mental health research but often report the highest internalizing disorders of any gender group. Finally, we use intersectionality as a lens to acknowledge how gender and other social identities (e.g., race, socioeconomic position) impact mental health. Overall, this review points to gender as a meaningful social construct that is relevant for understanding young people's internalizing symptoms during the pandemic. We call attention to the structural factors underlying gender disparities and the need for intersectionality-informed approaches to work towards mental health equity.

BACKGROUND: Immunotherapy targeting GD2 is very effective against high-risk neuroblastoma, though administration of anti-GD2 antibodies induces severe and dose-limiting neuropathic pain by binding GD2-expressing sensory neurons. Previously, the IgG1 ch14.18 (dinutuximab) antibody was reformatted into the IgA1 isotype, which abolishes neuropathic pain and induces efficient neutrophil-mediated antibody-dependent cellular cytotoxicity (ADCC) via activation of the Fc alpha receptor (FcαRI/CD89). METHODS: To generate an antibody suitable for clinical application, we engineered an IgA molecule (named IgA3.0 ch14.18) with increased stability, mutated glycosylation sites and substituted free (reactive) cysteines. The following mutations were introduced: N45.2G and P124R (CH1 domain), C92S, N120T, I121L and T122S (CH2 domain) and a deletion of the tail piece P131-Y148 (CH3 domain). IgA3.0 ch14.18 was evaluated in binding assays and in ADCC and antibody-dependent cellular phagocytosis (ADCP) assays with human, neuroblastoma patient and non-human primate effector cells. We performed mass spectrometry analysis of N-glycans and evaluated the impact of altered glycosylation in IgA3.0 ch14.18 on antibody half-life by performing pharmacokinetic (PK) studies in mice injected intravenously with 5 mg/kg antibody solution. A dose escalation study was performed to determine in vivo efficacy of IgA3.0 ch14.18 in an intraperitoneal mouse model using 9464D-GD2 neuroblastoma cells as well as in a subcutaneous human xenograft model using IMR32 neuroblastoma cells. Binding assays and PK studies were compared with one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA), ADCC and ADCP assays and in vivo tumor outgrowth with two-way ANOVA followed by Tukey's post-hoc test. RESULTS: ADCC and ADCP assays showed that particularly neutrophils and macrophages from healthy donors, non-human primates and patients with neuroblastoma are able to kill neuroblastoma tumor cells efficiently with IgA3.0 ch14.18. IgA3.0 ch14.18 contains a more favorable glycosylation pattern, corresponding to an increased antibody half-life in mice compared with IgA1 and IgA2. Furthermore, IgA3.0 ch14.18 penetrates neuroblastoma tumors in vivo and halts tumor outgrowth in both 9464D-GD2 and IMR32 long-term tumor models. CONCLUSIONS: IgA3.0 ch14.18 is a promising new therapy for neuroblastoma, showing (1) increased half-life compared to natural IgA antibodies, (2) increased protein stability enabling effortless production and purification, (3) potent CD89-mediated tumor killing in vitro by healthy subjects and patients with neuroblastoma and (4) antitumor efficacy in long-term mouse neuroblastoma models.

Health and wellness coaching (HWC) is an effective intervention for lifestyle disease such as obesity and type 2 diabetes. The evolving HWC profession needs recommendations to guide clinical practice, particularly the appropriate dose of coaching. The purpose of this paper was to systematically review and synthesize HWC literature to derive HWC programming recommendations. Of 102 papers retrieved, 88 were retained with data extracted determining HWC session number, frequency, duration, program length, and total coaching load. Differential analysis yielded no statistical difference in programming variables for randomized control trials and other designs, nor for studies with significant findings v. those not finding statistical significance, allowing these data to be pooled. The HWC intervention for obesity was slightly more intense (15 sessions over 7-8 mo) than the diabetes programming (12 sessions over 9-10 mo). On average, HWC programming applied in the peer-reviewed literature was 12-15 sessions of 35-40 min duration over 7-9 months. These recommendations for HWC programming variables are put forth as initial practice guidelines and should be examined with comparative effectiveness study for optimization. HWC best practice guidelines for other patient groups (e.g., heart disease, cancer, and chronic pain) should also be studied once an adequate literature data base is available.

Cannabis use is a growing health concern emphasizing the need to better understand the complexities of drug choice in people with daily/near daily cannabis use. Hypothetical purchasing tasks provide a means to collect data on drug consumption behavior without requiring drug administration and have been used to isolate behavioral economic factors of choice, including facets of drug demand in substance using populations. Various models are used for analyzing hypothetical purchasing task data, but challenges exist in modeling data sets with consumption values of zero. Additionally, a single model or approach may not be best for all commodities and drug classes. This study compared two common demand models (exponential vs. exponentiated) applied to identical hypothetical purchasing task data from 21 (n = 21) individuals with daily/near daily cannabis use. The exponential model was fit using three common levels of replacement values for zero consumption (.1, .01, .001) and compared to the exponentiated model without replacement values. We found that the exponentiated model produced significantly better model fits for individual data, compared to all exponential models. Additionally, significant differences for model derived values of demand elasticity and intensity were found between the exponentiated model and different levels of the exponential model. We conclude that the exponentiated model is preferred over the exponential model for performing demand analysis on hypothetical purchasing task data from individuals with daily/near daily cannabis use. BACKGROUND: Thyroid dysfunction (hypo- and hyperthyroidism) has been reported as a late effect after hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) in children. Short-term effects of HSCT on thyroid function parameters are, however, unclear. METHODS: We prospectively evaluated thyroid function parameters before and 3 months after HSCT in all children (<21 years) who underwent HSCT during a 2-year period in the Princess Máxima Center, the Netherlands. RESULTS: Among 72 children, none had thyroidal hypothyroidism or hyperthyroidism 3 months after HSCT. Changes in thyroid function parameters (either aberrant thyroid-stimulating hormone [TSH] or free thyroxine [FT4] concentrations) were found in 16% before and in 10% 3 months after HSCT. Reverse triiodothyronine (rT3) was found elevated in 9.3% before and in 37% 3 months after HSCT, which could be related to poor physical condition. An individual decline in FT4 concentration of ≥20% was found in 10.5% (6/57) 3 months after HSCT. CONCLUSION: In conclusion, thyroidal hypo- and hyperthyroidism are very rare 3 months after HSCT. These results indicate that surveillance for hypo- and hyperthyroidism may start later in time. The changes in thyroid function parameters found 3 months after HSCT might reflect euthyroid sick syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Risk-reducing salpingectomy with delayed oophorectomy has gained interest for individuals at high risk for tubo-ovarian cancer as there is compelling evidence that especially high-grade serous carcinoma originates in the fallopian tubes. Two studies have demonstrated a positive effect of salpingectomy on menopause-related quality of life and sexual health compared with standard risk-reducing salpingo-oophorectomy. PRIMARY OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether salpingectomy with delayed oophorectomy is non-inferior to the current standard salpingo-oophorectomy for the prevention of tubo-ovarian cancer among individuals at high inherited risk. STUDY HYPOTHESIS: We hypothesize that postponement of oophorectomy after salpingectomy, to the age of 40-45 (BRCA1) or 45-50 (BRCA2) years, compared with the current standard salpingo-oophorectomy at age 35-40 (BRCA1) or 40-45 (BRCA2) years, is non-inferior in regard to tubo-ovarian cancer risk. TRIAL DESIGN: In this international prospective preference trial, participants will choose between the novel salpingectomy with delayed oophorectomy and the current standard salpingo-oophorectomy. Salpingectomy can be performed after the completion of childbearing and between the age of 25 and 40 (BRCA1), 25 and 45 (BRCA2), or 25 and 50 (BRIP1, RAD51C, and RAD51D pathogenic variant carriers) years. Subsequent oophorectomy is recommended at a maximum delay of 5 years beyond the upper limit of the current guideline age for salpingo-oophorectomy. The current National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN) guideline age, which is also the recommended age for salpingo-oophorectomy within the study, is 35-40 years for BRCA1, 40-45 years for BRCA2, and 45-50 years for BRIP1, RAD51C, and RAD51D pathogenic variant carriers. MAJOR INCLUSION/EXCLUSION CRITERIA: Premenopausal individuals with a documented class IV or V germline pathogenic variant in the BRCA1, BRCA2, BRIP1, RAD51C, or RAD51D gene who have completed childbearing are eligible for participation. Participants may have a personal history of a non-ovarian malignancy. PRIMARY ENDPOINT: The primary outcome is the cumulative tubo-ovarian cancer incidence at the target age: 46 years for BRCA1 and 51 years for BRCA2 pathogenic variant carriers. SAMPLE SIZE: The sample size to ensure sufficient power to test non-inferiority of salpingectomy with delayed oophorectomy compared with salpingo-oophorectomy requires 1500 BRCA1 and 1500 BRCA2 pathogenic variant carriers. ESTIMATED DATES FOR COMPLETING ACCRUAL AND PRESENTING RESULTS: Participant recruitment is expected to be completed at the end of 2026 (total recruitment period of 5 years). AIM: Reliably diagnosing or safely excluding serous tubal intraepithelial carcinoma (STIC), a precursor lesion of tubo-ovarian high-grade serous carcinoma (HGSC), is crucial for individual patient care, for better understanding the oncogenesis of HGSC, and for safely investigating novel strategies to prevent tubo-ovarian carcinoma. To optimize STIC diagnosis and increase its reproducibility, we set up a three-round Delphi study. METHODS AND RESULTS: In round 1, an international expert panel of 34 gynecologic pathologists, from 11 countries, was assembled to provide input regarding STIC diagnosis, which was used to develop a set of statements. In round 2, the panel rated their level of agreement with those statements on a 9-point Likert scale. In round 3, statements without previous consensus were rated again by the panel while anonymously disclosing the responses of the other panel members. Finally, each expert was asked to approve or disapprove the complete set of consensus statements. The panel indicated their level of agreement with 64 statements. A total of 27 statements (42%) reached consensus after three rounds. These statements reflect the entire diagnostic work-up for pathologists, regarding processing and macroscopy (three statements); microscopy (eight statements); immunohistochemistry (nine statements); interpretation and reporting (four statements); and miscellaneous (three statements). The final set of consensus statements was approved by 85%. CONCLUSION: This study provides an overview of current clinical practice regarding STIC diagnosis amongst expert gynecopathologists. The experts' consensus statements form the basis for a set of recommendations, which may help towards more consistent STIC diagnosis.

BACKGROUND: Thyroid hormone anomalies during childhood might affect neurological development, school performance and quality of life, as well as daily energy, growth, body mass index and bone development. Thyroid dysfunction (hypo- or hyperthyroidism) may occur during childhood cancer treatment, although its prevalence is unknown. The thyroid profile may also change as a form of adaptation during illness, which is called euthyroid sick syndrome (ESS). In children with central hypothyroidism, a decline in FT4 of >20% has been shown to be clinically relevant. We aimed to quantify the percentage, severity and risk factors of a changing thyroid profile in the first three months of childhood cancer treatment. METHODS: In 284 children with newly diagnosed cancer, a prospective evaluation of the thyroid profile was performed at diagnosis and three months after starting treatment. RESULTS: Subclinical hypothyroidism was found in 8.2% and 2.9% of children and subclinical hyperthyroidism in 3.6% and in 0.7% of children at diagnosis and after three months, respectively. ESS was present in 1.5% of children after three months. In 28% of children, FT4 concentration decreased by ≥20%. CONCLUSIONS: Children with cancer are at low risk of developing hypo- or hyperthyroidism in the first three months after starting treatment but may develop a significant decline in FT4 concentrations. Future studies are needed to investigate the clinical consequences thereof.

The COVID-19 pandemic and violence against people of Color during 2020 brought troubling racial inequities to the forefront of American discourse. In line with the Critical Consciousness (CC) and Social Justice Youth Development (SJYD) frameworks, emerging adults may have developed their capacity for critical reflection, motivation, and action against systemic inequities. We drew from interviews with 27 emerging adults (ages 18-23) across the US, and used thematic analysis to explore differences in their reflections, motivations to act, and actions based on their racial/ethnic identification. We found nuanced variability in their critical reflections based on self, social, or global awareness and experiences of marginalization. White and Asian emerging adults used vague language or expressed feeling their reflections were insufficient. Black and Latinx emerging adults emphasized the importance of education and raising awareness. Although all emerging adults took action based on a sense of duty, few engaged in critical action; decisions to take in-person action varied based on whether they viewed racism or COVID-19 as a greater threat. Findings demonstrate that emerging adults' experiences of racialization may have related to their CC development. We share implications for community psychologists conducting antiracist research addressing White fragility and dismantling racial hierarchy.

BACKGROUND: Sinonasal mucosal melanoma (MM) is a rare, aggressive melanoma subtype. Complete surgical excision, with or without adjuvant radiotherapy, remains the cornerstone of treatment and yields adequate locoregional control. Metastatic MM is managed similarly to metastatic cutaneous melanoma but with poorer survival. PReferentially expressed Antigen in MElanoma (PRAME) has been identified as a potential diagnostic marker and therapeutic target in the treatment of cutaneous melanoma. METHODS: Retrospective analysis of the clinical characteristics and immunohistochemical features of all sinonasal MM patients referred to the department of Head and Neck Surgical Oncology, UMC Utrecht Cancer Center, between 2011 and 2021 was performed. Single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) array and next-generation sequencing (NGS) were performed in selected cases. RESULTS: A total of 26 patients with an MM were included. The median follow-up duration was 15 months. At the end of follow-up, 13 patients had died due to progression of their disease, and one patient died of intercurrent disease. PRAME immunohistochemistry was performed in 23 out of 26 cases, all displaying PRAME expression. In two cases PRAME expression was present both within the melanoma cells and in melanocytes in adjacent mucosa. SNP array showed ≥ 5 copy number variants (CNV) in all tested cases, with a median of 29.5 CNVs (IQR 23.25-40). The three most common mutations identified by NGS were NRAS (7 cases) and NF1 (2 cases). CONCLUSION: We show that expression of PRAME is common in sinonasal MM, making PRAME a useful ancillary diagnostic tool and a potential therapeutic target in sinonasal MM. The demonstrated occurrence of extensive presence of PRAME-positive melanocytes in the surrounding mucosa of sinonasal MM might explain the multifocal nature of melanoma in the (sinonasal) mucosa, and would be an extra argument for a PRAME targeting treatment in preventing local disease recurrence.

BACKGROUND: Hippocampal avoidance (HA) has been shown to preserve cognitive function in adult patients with cancer treated with whole-brain radiation therapy for brain metastases. However, the feasibility of HA in pediatric patients with brain tumors has not been explored because of concerns of increased risk of relapse in the peri-hippocampal region. Our aim was to determine patterns of recurrence and incidence of peri-hippocampal relapse in pediatric patients with medulloblastoma (MB). METHODS AND MATERIALS: We identified pediatric patients with MB treated with protons between 2002 and 2016 and who had recurrent disease. To estimate the risk of peri-hippocampal recurrence, three hippocampal zones (HZs) were delineated corresponding to ≤5 mm (HZ-1), 6 to 10 mm (HZ-2), and >10 mm (HZ-3) distance of the recurrence from the contoured hippocampi. To determine the feasibility of HA, three standard-risk patients with MB were planned using either volumetric-modulated arc therapy (VMAT) or intensity-modulated proton therapy (IMPT) plans. RESULTS: Thirty-eight patients developed a recurrence at a median of 1.6 years. Of the 25 patients who had magnetic resonance imaging of the recurrence, no patients failed within the hippocampus and only two patients failed within HZ-1. The crude incidence of peri-hippocampal failure was 8%. Both HA-VMAT and HA-IMPT plans were associated with significantly reduced mean dose to the hippocampi (p < .05). HA-VMAT and HA-IMPT plans were associated with decreased percentage of the third and lateral ventricles receiving the prescription craniospinal dose of 23.4 Gy. CONCLUSIONS: Peri-hippocampal failures are uncommon in pediatric patients with MB. Hippocampal avoidance should be evaluated in a prospective cohort of pediatric patients with MB. PLAIN LANGUAGE SUMMARY: In this study, the patterns of disease recurrence in patients with a pediatric brain tumor known as medulloblastoma treated with proton radiotherapy were examined. The majority of failures occur outside of an important structure related to memory formation called the hippocampus. Hippocampal sparing radiation plans using proton radiotherapy were generated and showed that dose to the hippocampus was able to be significantly reduced. The study provides the rationale to explore hippocampal sparing in pediatric medulloblastoma in a prospective clinical trial.

OBJECTIVES: We show that participatory research approaches can be a useful tool across disciplines and data collection methods to explore the socio-exposome near one of the largest industrial harbors in Europe. We analyzed resident involvement in each project and their capacity to affect structural changes. METHODS: Longitudinal participatory environmental monitoring studies on lichens, petunias, aquatic systems and groundwater were conducted under the program VOCE (Volunteers for the Citizens' Observation of the Environment), which mobilized nearly 100 volunteers to collect and report data. A community-based participatory health survey, Fos EPSEAL was also carried out during the same period. We describe citizens' involvement in each study following Davis and Ramirez-Andreotta's (2021) 'best practice' grid. We also use residents' insights to refine understanding of the socio-exposome. RESULTS: The region is significantly impacted by industrial pollution and fenceline communities are disproportionately exposed. The community-based participatory health survey documented negative health outcomes among the residents, including a higher prevalence of chronic symptoms and diabetes (e.g., 11.9%) in the Fos-Berre Lagoon region than in other communities. This methodology shows the benefits of the co-production of knowledge in environmental health: not only does it enable epistemological transformations favorable to the vulnerable population, but it also triggered public action (i.e., media and public authorities' attention leading to official expertise reports, filing of collective complaints before the courts). CONCLUSION: This body of multiple participatory research studies over time is a useful approach to better understand the socio-exposome and health issues in an industrial zone.

Among several fruits, mangaba (Hancornia speciosa Gomes), it aroused the interest of producers and consumers due to its attractive sensory characteristics and health beneficial properties (high nutritional value and presence of bioactive substances), thus, this work evaluates the nutritional factors of the flour residue of mangaba processing that is despised by the food industry, and the influence of temperature on its production. The mangaba processing residue was splited in two main groups: in natura sample (control), and other for preparation of flour that was dried at 50 °C and divided into two other groups: treatment A (flour with roasts at 110 °C and 130 °C) and treatment B (flour from drying at 50 °C). The nutritional characteristics of flours were analyzed considering the chemical parameters: pH, titratable total acidity and soluble solids, in addition to the determination of moisture content, total lipids, total dietary fiber and ash, total energy value, antioxidant activity, phytochemical screening, quantification of phenolic compounds and flavonoids, as well as technological functional properties (water absorption index (WAI), water solubility index (WSI), milk absorption index (MAI) and milk solubility index (MSI) and oil absorption index (OAI). The results showed that the bioactive compounds present in the extracts do not have significant properties of acting as free radical kidnappers. The heat treatment, performed in the flour of mangaba processing residues, influenced the nutritional factors and properties of absorption and solubility, which showed statistical differences. These results show that the flour is a viable alternative for the energy enrichment of diets, contributing to the development of new products, the reduction of the disposal of these residues and consequently to the minimization of the environmental impact.


Dentre as diversas frutas a mangaba (Hancornia speciosa Gomes), despertou interesse de produtores e consumidores devido às suas características sensoriais atrativas e propriedades benéficas à saúde (elevado valor nutricional e presença de substâncias bioativas), assim, o trabalho avaliar os fatores nutricionais do resíduo da farinha de processamento de mangaba que é desprezado pela indústria alimentícia e, a influência da temperatura na sua produção. O resíduo de processamento da mangaba foi dividido em dois lotes, sendo um deles utilizado para as análises in natura (amostra controle) e o outro para a confecção da farinha que foi seca a 50 °C, e dividida em dois lotes: tratamento A (farinha com torras a 110 °C e 130 °C) e no tratamento B (farinha oriunda da secagem a 50 °C). Analisou-se as características nutricionais de farinhas considerando os parâmetros químicos: pH, acidez total titulável e sólidos solúveis, além da determinação do teor de umidade, lipídios totais, fibra alimentar total e cinzas, valor energético total, atividade antioxidante, triagem fitoquímica, quantificação de compostos fenólicos e flavonoides, bem como as propriedades funcionais tecnológicas (índice de absorção de água (IAA), índice de solubilidade em água (ISA), índice de absorção de leite (IAL) e índice de solubilidade em leite (ISL) e índice de absorção de óleo (IAO). Na análise foi inferido que os compostos bioativos presentes nos extratos não possuem propriedades significativas de agir como sequestradores de radicais livres. O tratamento térmico, realizado na farinha de resíduos de processamento de mangaba, influenciou nos dados dos fatores nutricionais e das propriedades de absorção e solubilidade, os quais apresentaram diferenças estatísticas. Estes resultados credenciam a farinha como uma alternativa viável para o enriquecimento energético de dietas, contribuindo para o desenvolvimento de [...].
